What Is a PetroPad & How Does It Work?

Oil and fuel leaks can create messy, costly, and potentially hazardous conditions around vehicles, machinery, and industrial equipment. Traditional absorbent pads and drip trays can help contain these fluids, but they may require frequent cleanup and can become problematic when used outdoors.

The PetroPad™ Smart Polymer Spill Pad from Justrite provides a different approach. Instead of simply absorbing hydrocarbons, PetroPad uses smart-polymer technology to capture and solidify oils, fuels, and other hydrocarbons inside the pad.

What Is a PetroPad?

PetroPad is a spill-control mat designed to be placed beneath equipment where incidental drips, leaks, or spills of hydrocarbons may occur. Typical applications include generators, pumps, construction equipment, industrial machinery, refueling locations, and automotive service areas. Unlike a traditional absorbent that simply soaks up liquid, PetroPad contains smart polymers embedded within a geotextile fabric. These polymers react with hydrocarbons such as oil, diesel, gasoline, and hydraulic fluids, capturing and solidifying them within the pad.

How Does PetroPad Work?

The process happens automatically when hydrocarbons come into contact with the pad. When oil or fuel reaches the smart-polymer material, the polymer reacts with it and transforms the hydrocarbon into an insoluble, rubber-like solid that remains trapped within the pad. According to the manufacturer, the captured contaminants resist being released by rainfall or even pressure washing. This means the pad can remain beneath equipment to collect recurring incidental leaks rather than necessarily being replaced after every small drip.

What Happens When It Rains?

One of PetroPad's biggest advantages is its use in outdoor environments. A conventional drip tray can collect rainwater along with oil. Eventually, that tray may fill with a mixture of contaminated water and hydrocarbons that must be managed appropriately. PetroPad takes a different approach. Hydrocarbons are retained within the pad while rainwater can pass through, allowing the pad to continue functioning without the raised sidewalls found on a traditional drip tray. This makes PetroPads particularly useful beneath equipment that must remain outdoors for extended periods.

Where Can PetroPads Be Used?

PetroPads may be useful anywhere small hydrocarbon leaks and drips are expected, including beneath:

  • Generators
  • Pumps
  • Construction equipment
  • Industrial machinery
  • Lighting towers
  • Fuel tanks
  • Vehicles and automotive equipment
  • Equipment around refueling areas

Justrite specifically identifies applications involving industrial machinery, construction equipment, generators, pumps, refueling stations, and automotive repair and servicing.  PetroPads are intended for incidental drips, spills, and leaks rather than large-volume hydrocarbon releases, so facilities still need an appropriate spill-response plan for larger incidents.

How Do You Know When a PetroPad Is Full?

As the smart polymer reacts with hydrocarbons, the material increases in thickness. Manufacturer guidance indicates that once the pad has approximately doubled in thickness throughout, it has reached capacity and should be replaced. How long that takes depends on the amount and frequency of leakage. In applications with only occasional small drips, a PetroPad may remain in service for an extended period before reaching capacity.

Can You Clean a PetroPad?

PetroPad's design also makes routine housekeeping easier. Dirt and debris can be pressure washed from the surface without releasing the hydrocarbons that have been captured inside, according to Justrite. This can be especially helpful on construction sites and around outdoor equipment where mud, dust, and other debris can quickly accumulate.

A Smarter Approach to Everyday Spill Control

PetroPads offer a convenient way to manage routine oil, fuel, diesel, and hydraulic-fluid leaks without relying exclusively on conventional disposable absorbent pads or open drip trays. By capturing hydrocarbons and transforming them into a solid material while allowing rainwater to pass through, PetroPad can be particularly useful for outdoor machinery, construction equipment, generators, and other equipment prone to incidental leaks.

As with any spill-control product, the pad should be appropriately sized for the application and used according to manufacturer instructions. Used PetroPads should also be handled and disposed of in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations
